They say that every story has a villain but every villain also has a story. This is probably the reason why despite their villainous acts, Disney villains are still some of the most well loved characters in both film and book versions of Disney stories.

While everyone loves to see the happy ends of the princesses and their knights in shining armor, their sweetness will be for nothing without someone who tries every trick to pull them apart.

Without further ado, here are some of the best Disney villains that fans love to hate or hate to love, whatever applies.

  1. Sleeping Beauty’s Maleficent

Sleeping Beauty remains to be one of the Disney films with the most gorgeous animations. But, this spellbinding story is made even more captivating thanks to Maleficent, the lead villain. Maleficent almost has everything you can expect from an excellent Disney villain. Conniving and evil, she became an instant icon the first time she appeared.

  1. The Lion King’s Scar

Scar is a delightfully vile and reprehensible villain named as such because of his facial mark. He callously murdered his own brother and ordered his adorable nephew’s execution just so he can become the ruler of all animals. Together with his hyena minions, Scar was ruthless in doing everything necessary to become powerful.

  1. Peter Pan, Return To Never Land’s Captain Hook

Although not an original Disney creation, their version of Captain Hook from the 1953 movie Peter Pan is considered as the most defining and distinctive interpretation of this infamous literary character. Despite being less menacing than other versions with his own grave terror moments on the young protagonists, Disney’s version of the sea-based character with revenge running through his blood has perfectly combined the character’s cruel desire of hunting and killing Peter Pan and his buffoonish side.

  1. Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs’ The Evil Queen

In the Disney world’s evil realm, who can ever forget The Evil Queen’s request for an innocent girl’s heart? Queen Grimhilde, more popularly called the Evil Queen never liked the thought that someone else in the kingdom surpassed her beauty that she went out of her way to kill anyone who may take her place. Needless to say, this villain is totally insane. Using her magic mirror to ease her insecurity, she found out that her own stepdaughter was her competition. She then disguised herself as a hag to poison Snow White all because she was prettier. Now, that’s crazy, isn’t it?

  1. Beauty And The Beast’s Gaston

Gaston is the personification of misogyny. This brawny and brutish man has an overinflated sense of self with any regard for people he considers weaker than him. While it was entertaining to watch his failed dim-witted attempts of wooing Belle, Gaston ultimately became one of the more sinister Disney villains because of his stubborn and childish belief of being entitled to anyone and anything he wanted. His villainous and manipulative acts are extra gross that you cannot help but hate him outright.
